Curd Rice Recipe
Curd rice, also known as Thayir Sadam, is a simple and comforting South Indian dish made with cooked rice and curd (yogurt). It is light, cooling, and very easy to digest, making it perfect for hot weather and light meals.
If you want to make creamy and tasty curd rice at home, follow this easy recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cooked rice (soft and slightly mushy)
- 1 to 1.5 cups fresh curd (yogurt)
- 1/4 cup milk (optional, for creaminess)
- Salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon oil or ghee
For Tempering
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1–2 dried red chilies
- 8–10 curry leaves
- 1–2 green chilies (optional)
- 1 tablespoon chopped ginger (optional)
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
Method
1. Prepare Rice
Cook rice until soft. Let it cool slightly and mash lightly.
2. Mix Curd
Add curd (and milk if using) to the rice and mix well until creamy.
3. Add Salt
Add salt and mix again. Adjust consistency with more curd if needed.
4. Prepare Tempering
Heat oil or ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds, curry leaves, red chilies, green chilies, ginger, and hing.
5. Combine
Pour the tempering over curd rice and mix gently.
Tips for Perfect Curd Rice
- Use soft, overcooked rice for best texture
- Fresh curd gives better taste
- Add milk to keep it creamy for longer time
- Serve chilled for refreshing taste
